You know, for beginners, Pencil drawing and artistic shading is the first lesson in the art of painting on one hand, and on another, it is the primary work for a big artwork like oil colour or a watercolour painting. Let us try our hand at drawing an Elephant.

The Technique:   First of all look at the sample of an elephant drawing given hereIn this drawing of the elephants, the artist has put up the best efforts. He did exact line drawing and excellent use of pencils of different grades. Materials do matter. Pencils, erasers, and a bunch of drawing papers. We can shop for such fine tip pencils from any art dealer nearby. It would come with labels like H1, H2, H3 and onwards... and B1, B2 and like that. The H stands for hardness and B for softness. Note it down, please. It would be helpful.

Generally, an artist would use pencils ranging from B3 to H2. Soft to hard. Some experienced artists do beautiful drawings with coloured pencils, too. They execute excellent drawings. If the materials like pens, pencils, papers, and erasers are from a reliable art supplier, they would never fail in giving a good output.

However, when we look at some of the pencil drawings, we feel that pencil art is also a branch of art itself. Look at the pencil drawing of 'mother and son elephants' given here. It is one of the loveliest illustrations of pencil shadings I have recently seen.  You can see the masterly done shading work here in this elephant drawing. It has enhanced the value of drawing. The expressions of mother and son elephants are depicted so nicely that everything looks natural.

How to Draw an Elephant with Pen and Ink Artists use different mediums for re-creating the images he or she likes to draw. Pen and ink are some of the most modern and widely used tools.

Students use pen and ink in drawing schools and the artists, too, use ink in the drawing. Look at this drawing in progress. We can see a phenomenal use of pen and ink by the artist Paul Brady. Look at the delicacy of his putting the points on the paper. This drawing is done in the style of drawing and painting known as 'Pointillism'.

Such nice work can be put on paper by artistically varying the degree of the pressure of the pencil. In this artwork done by pencil, the entire space of the body of both the elephants given above is shaded with artistic prowess. In addition to that due care has been taken to depict the presence of light that is falling from the backs of both lovely elephants.

In this artwork, the line drawing is also masterly executed. Such precise pencil artwork can be done only by an artist having ample experience. A work like this would require the utmost care and precision by an artist.

This is the final drawing. We can see how much artistic care and precision have been taken. This drawing can be an example for students who want to learn to draw with an ink pen. Drawing under the guidance of a trained teacher, or attending a drawing class for one full week would be of much help.

The different shades of ink have made this piece of art so wonderful. It can be done by varying pressure on the pen. Look at the blank spaces. These blank areas are put in with a purpose. The space left blank plays a vital tool in pointillism. A student of art can surely learn this technique. For this, he or she should be giving committed time and the fullest attention while doing the work. The drawing of animals like horses and elephants is really a pleasant art.

Symbolic Meaning of Elephant in Art:     Do you know why we love elephants? There are historical reasons. Since the primitive age, the elephant has played an important role in our life and development. It has generated symbolic meaning for the elephant. In art and literature, too, the elephant is shown as a symbol of power and nobility. The unmatched strength and huge utility of the elephant have made it a symbol of strength and development.
